After pulling out Ford Explorer back in 2001 in the European market, the company believes it can win back premium brand customers from the region with its introduction of Ford Edge –a large SUV that will available late next year.

It’ll be aimed mainly at premium segment consumers to rival medium-sized SUVs such as Audi Q5 and Volvo XC60 with more space to offer. It’s Ford’s bid to dig a strong return in the European market next year. Though, it’ll not be an easy drive going back with the competition from segment leaders such as Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz –all with a home-court advantage.

When compared with Audi Q7, it’s said that Edge is a five-seater but bigger than the 7-seater Q7 and will significantly cost less that starts with 53,500 euros in Germany. Though, Ford didn’t comment on the real price range of Ford Edge when released in EU.

Ford Edge will be offered in “two versions of Ford’s 2.0-liter diesel engine, one with 180hp and CO2 emissions of 149 grams per km and the other with 210hp and emissions of 159g/km. All versions offer four-wheel drive.” Edge will be made for the first time in right-hand drive versions.

Edge sales have remained consistently above 100,000 units since 2007 in the US. IHS Automotive expects that Edge sales in EU will be around 8,000 units while around 30,000 in China(second largest Edge’s market) in 2016.
